Captain Ahab commands the Pequod but secretly turns a commercial voyage into a hunt for Moby Dick. His authority, injury, and monomania organize the novel’s central conflict.
Where this comes from: Melville gives a striking first portrait: grey hair, a tawny scorched face, a long pale mark down one side, and an ivory leg made from whale bone.
